Need Thorough References on Dog Behavior
Question:
: Can anyone suggest books, websites, or any other references that do a : really good job of deconstructing dog behavior — like what each kind : of bark means, how dogs interact with each other, how dogs play, how : they communicate in detail, sequences of actions in their behaviors, : etc. (I’m working on the next version of the Dogz your Computer Petz : – see www.pfmagic.com) : [snip] : : thanks, : Andrew You might take a look at Know Your Dog by Bruce Fogle, D.V.M. The blurb on the back cover includes statements such as, "Gain fascinating insights into how dogs communicate through body language, ’speaking,’ and rituals. Examine the true nature of dogs and their owners. Follow a guided tour of the dog’s mind with a widely acclaimed animal behaviourist and veterinarian. Take an intimate look at canine life–from birth, through frolicking puppyhood, to loyal maturity." — James L. Ryan

Milani (too narrative, not enough of a real systematic reference) thanks, Andrew

Also, (sometimes hard to find in the US) anything by John Fisher or John Rogerson. April with Levi and Caper, the Border Collie Hurricanes

Here’s a few more for your list: The New Knowledge of Dog Behavior, Clarence Pfaffenberger Dog Psychology, Leon Whitney, DVM Why Does Your Dog Do That, Coren Bergman Help, My Dog is Driving Me Crazy, Daniel Tortura Dog Problems, William Campbell I liked the last two especially – and Pfaffenberger’s book mostly for the stories – the other two are a little heavy to wade through. Charlotte Creeley

I heartily recommend any of the dog books put out by the Brothers of New Skete. The one I have is called "The Art of Raising a Puppy", and there is also one called "How to be Your Dog’s Best Friend". These are informative, easy to read books, with plenty of pictures and much very useful data regarding dog behaviour and instincts and so on. I think you would find these to be most helpful… >thanks, >Andrew
