My Aussie Coolie cross is seriously weird but lovely!! She often attacks a neighbours great dane cross – it sounds bad but no physical harm is done. Then minutes later will approach the dane to lick her face. Understandably the owner is not overly happy and the dane is rather neurotic! Because it does sound so awful others have got involved and reprimanded my dog. Can anyone help or offer advice (Please don’t say obedience classes as we’re 750km from anywhere!) Thanks Katrina

  I know a bit about dog behav.  but need to know a few more things before going any further..    What are the sexes of both dogs?   Are the dogs playmates or just fence buddies?  Are the incidents of "attack" often the same (place/surroundings, people involved, etc)?    Dog behavior can be as complicated as human behavior.  Often times taking the dog to obedience wont help.  Behavior modification mixed with obedience helps more.    Studt the incidents, try to think in terms of very small children that are not getting along.  As no blood seems to be shed, go slow.  Quick fixes are not the best solution. (like putting a bandaid on a broken arm)  It could be a simple territory problem.  Also study the emotions of any persons around, that will also give you a small clue as to what the dogs are thinking.    Intrested in helping and awaiting further info…..                            K9 Camp Counselor

Hello Katrina, It does seem odd that she’d be on and off again just like that. Perhaps it’s a boy/girl thing? Is the Dane X a girl? Are either or both neutered? I’m just trying to figure out what would prompt her to be aggressive and friendly shortly thereafter. It could be just a misunderstanding of their greeting behavior. How many times have they scrapped? This sounds like something that may be worked out quickly between them. If you can anticipate when she is going to make a go for it, you can interrupt her thinking with sound distractions and praise, and if you can repeat that a few times, you’ll break the behavior.
