Dog books

Question:

Does anyone know of any good, basic books on domestic dog behavior and/or communication? I haven’t had much luck yet searching the libraries. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction. Dave

Dave, Direct Book Service carries every book ever published on dogs. Their number is 800-776-2665 or FAX 509-662-7233. I recommend you start with: Mother Knows Best, the natural way to train your dog, by Carol Lea Benjamin The Art of Raising a Puppy, by the Monks of New Skete Manners for the Modern Dog, by Bohnenkamp  Help! My Dog has an Attitude, by Bohnenkamp What would people think if I didn’t rec my own books <g>?? There are tons more after these excellent starters. Ask Direct Book for their catalogue and you can browse til you find something that interests you. For real info, stay away from best selling gimmick type books which are great and fun reading, but any academic behaviorist will tell you, don’t hold water. I have a good book titled "How to Communicate with your Dog" – I can’t remember the author, and it’s on loan to my brother, who just got an 11 week-old puppy last weekend. It’s an American book, and the writing style is funny but still informative. Rachel

Good Owners, Great Dogs has a lot of info about how dogs communicate within a pack (whether canine or human) and how to understand this when you train your dog. Basia Halliop

Hi, My favorite dog book is "Dog Talk" by John Ross and Barbara ? (Sorry), it gives many useful training tips, explains why some things work with some dogs and others don’t, and has a step by step training manual. It is entertaining and informative. Another of my favorites is "Dog Watching" by Desmond Morris, which explains behavior of dogs by comparing them to wolves and other canines. This is an older book, but alsofun to read. It is not a dog training book, however. Also very good books, in my opinion, are the books by the Monks of New Skete. Have fun reading, Gabriele — Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods. A. Einstein

Gabriele recommends 2 great books I have read. I have found "Superdog – Raising the Perfect Canine Companion," by Dr. Michael W. Fox (I know, but it is not the actor) published by Howell Books, NY, 1990 to be an excellent resource on dog behavior, emotions, and advanced training techniques. David Noblitt

Response:

I agree that Superdog is a good book — IF you can get past all of the AR politics in it.  In my opinion, the AR stuff is just not necessary to the book. Janyne and Hannah

Hi,   Try: Understanding Your Dog by Dr.Michael Fox          Man Meets Dog by Konrad Lorenz          Dog Behavior by Dr.Ian Dunbar                                                         Bob Maida
